What is a 404 message? Its the page information that is displayed when a link to your site is clicked that no longer exists. Here are some other things you can do to make it easy for people to get back to an appropriate part of your site.

1. Allow people to go somewhere other than just back. Include weblinks to other important parts of the site, like the main page or site map. Polite comments asking the user to check spelling should be fairly low key. Use textual links as well as a graphic.

2. Include a form to contact the webmaster about broken links. People are more likely to use a form than send an email. For example, see this link to a form on our site.

3. Include a search box to search the site: eg this site (topclassified.co.uk) has a search box top right.

For Joomla users, you might like to look at adding a SEF component which handles the 404 redirection, otherwise it gets a bit fiddly messing about with error.php files.
